Are your dogs messy, fast eaters? I have one of each. Margi’s my super fast eater and Riedi’s my super messy eater (and slow too).
Dogs eating too fast can become a medical issue for them, so it’s best to try to rectify the problem as soon as possible. Margi was adopted from a rescue when she was a year and a half and I was told that she was picked up as a stray roaming the streets.
I think she eats so fast because she thinks she needs to protect her food. I’ve worked with her so she doesn’t guard her food and make her wait after she eats for her brother to finish his meal. Did I mention that Riedi’s a slow poke eater!
Fast Eating Can Be Dangerous
Fast eating can cause vomiting and even bloat in dogs! Bloat is dangerous and often deadly, so it’s important to try to get their fast eating under control. Margi used to woof down her food so fast that it was almost gone as soon as it hit the bowl. I tried numerous options without success. I tried putting a tennis ball and Kong in the bowl with the food to slow her down and that was yucky and nasty mixed with food and really didn’t work.
I never got to the slow feeders because I found a cheap and easy solution first. I now add water to her food and it slows her down because she’s drinking and eating together! I normally do it half and half – 1 cup food with 1 cup water. If you have a fast eater, try it and see how well it works!
Now Margi eats slower and I’ve even gotten her to sit nice next to her bowls while her brother finishes his meals! That’s a huge improvement! Although as you can see, she’s not too happy about waiting for her slow poke brother to finish eating.
Sloppy Eating is Just Nasty!
Riedi is such a sloppy eater! He would literally have the wall behind his food bowl covered in food. I may have cleaned more food off the wall than he ate at times.
If you’ve seen my livestreams, you may know that one of the things that I really dislike is cleaning. It is a chore that has to be done, but one I like to put off, procrastinate and hope that it cleans itself.
One day when I was in Dollar Tree checking out supplies I passed by the plastic placemats. Since everything’s just a dollar, I thought I would try it and see if I could manipulate it so that it would keep the splatter off my wall and it worked!!!
They have all different colors and they can even be thrown in the dishwasher and cleaned – PERFECT!
Two Problems Solved for a Dollar!
So for a dollar I was able to solve TWO eating problems for my dogs. No more worrying about Margi getting sick after eating too fast and no more having to clean the wall after each meal! Do you have any cheap and easy solutions to any of your pets eating problems? I’d love to hear about it.
