5 Ways to Repurpose Video Content
Whether it’s a live stream or a video you’ve spent extra time recording and editing, you’ll want to share the content in as many ways as possible to reach more people. With video over 75% of the content viewed online, you want to repurpose video content as much as possible!
YouTube
YouTube is the number 2 Search Engine, just behind Google, and it’s owned by Google! I’m sure you’ve noticed how YouTube results come up in Google Searches!
Because of this, the first place you want to make sure you upload your video is to YouTube. You’ll want to optimize your video with the following.
- Keyword in Title (and name of file)
- MetaData in the Video File
- Custom Thumbnail
- Video Description
- Tags (all of your keywords)
- Transcript File
- Cards
- Endscreen
The optimal size of a YouTube video is 1920 x 1080 (horizontal). If you started out with a Facebook Live, then you’ll want to use a video editor to resize it. I recommend simply adding a transparent image with one of your brand colors on the sides and the topic of the video, like this recent one I recorded.
The reason you don’t want to stretch the video is because it will become blurry and possibly get less views.
If you started out with a Facebook Live, make sure to go back and optimize it by adding a Thumbnail, Title, Full Description, Tags and Transcription.
If you first recorded your video for YouTube and want to repurpose the video content for Facebook, make sure you upload it directly to Facebook. Remember that Google owns YouTube and Facebook and Google are competing for your attention to be the most popular and trafficked website. Because of this, when you share a video on Facebook, it’s simply a link and when someone scrolls their feed, it doesn’t start playing!
To get more views on your video, you need to upload it directly to Facebook.
If you’re doing a Facebook Live, I prefer to record with a cell phone that makes the video vertical (1080 x 1920). This is primarily because when I use my laptop camera it records as a much smaller 640 x 360 size and it’s not optimal for YouTube. However, check your camera and Facebook settings to see if you get a different size.
IGTV
Earlier this year Instagram launched its new feature that allows long-form video format, IGTV. While it hasn’t been a booming success like Instagram Stories, if you’ve created a video, it’s worth 10 extra minutes to edit it to fit the IGTV format, which is vertical (1080 x 1920). You can use any number of video editors, but I’ve found that ShotCut works well and is an open source application.
Video Clips
I prefer my videos to be between 2 ½ minutes and 10 minutes long. To repurpose video content, I like to cut clips out of it, typically 15-45 seconds long. I use them as a teaser video to upload to social media and lead to the full video.
I like to cut my video to be a square video, normally 1080 x 1080. This is because for video clips shared on social media, square videos get more views and engagement because they are optimal for mobile watching.
You should be sharing your video clips on all of your social media channels, including Google My Business!
For instance, this is a video clip that leads to my blog. The blog post has my Facebook Live video embedded into it!
Blog
When repurposing video content, don’t forget about the one platform that you OWN, your website. You should be transcribing your video and also your video clips, this is the perfect starting point for your blog!
I like to start out with the video transcript and then simply rewrite it to fit a blog post. You’ll want to EMBED your video into the blog. This way, anyone that lands on your blog has a chance to watch your video.
The main question you should consider is what platform you should embed it from. You can grab the embed links from Facebook, YouTube and also IGTV. It’s really a preference as to what platform you want the views to show up on. This is because when someone watches an embedded video, the view counts on that social media channel. Yes, more SEO juice for you and your video!
Now that you have my top 5 ways to repurpose video content, I would love to hear in the comments if you have any other ways you repurpose videos. It can be a bit daunting and time consuming to consider uploading content to all of these different platforms, but once you’ve created the video, your primary goal is to get as many eyeballs on it as possible.
